China has imported nearly double the quantity of cotton during the first four months of the current year compared to the volume of cotton imported by it during the corresponding period of 2011.
During January-April 2012 period, China imported a total of 2.077 million tons of cotton, as against imports of 1.016 million tons during the same period last year, registering a year-on-year rise of 95.7 percent, according to customs statistics.
In April 2012, China imported 509,700 tons of cotton, up 143.1 percent compared to imports of 209,700 tons posted during the same month last year.
However, on a month-on-month basis, China's cotton imports witnessed a decline of 18.47 percent or 115,500 tons.
