MSCCGMFL to promote use of Krishidhan Bt cotton seeds

The Maharashtra State Cooperative Cotton Growers Marketing Federation Ltd. (MSCCGMFL), the world's largest cotton supplier, which supports more than 2.5 million cotton farmers, has entered into a strategic alliance with Krishidhan Seeds Private Limited, an agricultural biotech company delivering high quality seeds for the Indian market, to promote the use of Bt cotton seeds among cotton growers.

Pursuant to a public-private partnership, the farmers would be provided with Mahacot (KDCHH-065 BG-II) and Mahacot-2 (KDCHH 641 BG II), the two highest yielding cotton seed varieties from Krishidhan Seeds, for the current kharif season.

The two seed varieties are recognized for their high resistance against all major sucking pests, armyworm (Spodoptera) and bollworm (Helicoverpa), which are responsible for reducing cotton output across India.

Mahacot is suitable for both the rain fed and irrigated areas, and has good adaptability to all kinds of soil, with guaranteed high yields. The seed variety has an undefined growth habit, due to which the crop grows very high. Also, it has an excellent rejuvenation capacity.

Mahacot-2 is recognized for its significantly bigger boll size and high yielding capacity coupled with good fibre quality. The seed variety possesses very good rejuvenation capacity under irrigation conditions and intensive management.

MSCCGMFL Chairman NP Hirani said India is one of the world's leading cotton producers and the country has an ability to be a dominant cotton market player.

He said that under the public-private partnership model, they would make Bt seeds available to cotton farmers at a reasonable price and in their neighbourhood.

He further hoped that the partnership with Krishidhan Seeds would go a long way in ensuring enhanced benefits to farmers.

Expressing delight over the collaboration, Mr. Sushil Karwa, Managing Director at Krishidhan Group of Companies, said that at Krishidhan Seeds they strive to establish themselves as a socially responsible seed company working for upgradation of the farmers.

He added that such strategic alliances could help them achieve their goals. Through the collaboration they mean to provide farmers with good quality seeds, helping them to boost their output this season.
