Cotton production in West Texas is expected to surge 40 percent this year from the previous year and may even double if the region receives good rains, said a university cotton expert.
Darren Hudson, Director of Texas Tech University's Cotton Economics Research Institute said, “This year the cotton crop is expected to be in the range of 2.8 to 3.2 million bales (1 bale = 480 pounds)”.
He added, “However, if precipitation is good it may even double from last years figures when it stood at 2 million bales”.
Hudson a cotton analyst with 12 years experience behind him said the West Texas cotton crop fell to 2 million bales from an average of 4.5 million bales achieved in the last 10 years, mainly due to the worst drought in a century.
