The Chinese apparel sector is the largest in the world and alongside is also the largest consumer of fabrics in the world.

China's average annual consumption of apparel fabrics is more than 25 billion meters, of which it imports around 5 billion meters of all types of fabrics each year.

Value of imports, account for around 25-30 percent of the annual value of fabrics consumed by the Chinese apparel industry.

This clearly indicates that most of the imported fabrics are high-end fabrics. Of these maximum are man-made fibre and wool based products.

Amongst, imported fabrics, manmade fibre fabrics account for around 60 percent of all fabric imports.

Italy is the largest fabric supplier to China and exported wool fabrics amounting to US $145 million in 2009, accounting for 33 percent of China's wool fabric imports.
