As per Handloom Census 2010, West Bengal has over 5,50,000 handicraft artisans and 6,65,000 handloom weavers, who engage themselves in production of intricate varieties of handloom and handicraft items, Manas Bhunia, Micro and Small Scale Enterprises and Textile Minister said while releasing a hand book on various schemes in the handloom and handicraft sectors.

He said that besides extending financial assistance through banks on the basis of artisans’ credit cards and weavers’ credit cards, his Ministry is also preparing photo identity cards to be issued to weavers and artisans.

The weavers and artisans can also avail health care facilities and insurance for self and three dependants under the Rajiv Gandhi Shilpa Swastha Bima Yojana Scheme by paying a nominal premium, he said.

About the state’s policy for developing the handloom and handicraft sector, the Minister said the government has by now developed 27 clusters, while 16 are in their initial stages and 51 more are in pipeline.
