The Southeast African country of Mozambique is seeking China’s help for introduction of genetically-modified (GM) cotton in the country.

To study the feasibility of introducing GM cotton technology in the country, a group of technicians from Institutes related to research on agriculture and cotton in Mozambique are expected to visit China this year.

Upon conclusion of an agreement with China, the scientists would first conduct trials in Zambezia province’s Morrumbala district.

At present, tests on GM cotton are being carried out in over 50 countries, covering an estimated area of around 130 million hectares and involving more than 14 million cotton cultivators.

Mozambique exported cotton worth US$ 43.2 million this year and the country’s cotton exports are likely to increase to US$ 47.5 million in 2013.
