Cotton imports by China witnessed a high degree of fluctuation during the first nine months of the current year, according to the report on China’s import and export of textiles and apparels in the first three quarters of 2012 released by China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles.

Cotton imports reached their peak in the month of March, with imports reaching 625,000 tons. Subsequently, the quantity of imports fell and in the month of September, China imported only 263,000 tons of cotton.

Overall, during the first three quarters of the current year, China imported 4.03 million tons of cotton, registering an increase of 107 percent year-on-year.

However, the price gap between imported and domestic cotton still continues to be wide.

In September, the import price of cotton was US$ 2,360/ton.
