Mediterranean exports up 12 % at 15mn Euros, even as textiles go for consolidation

exports to the mediterranean countries rose 12 pc, from 13,883 million to 15,583 million euro during 2004, says italy's joint mediterranean chambers of commerce.

turkey which took the top spot among italy's leading importer accounted for 5,695 million euro; while algeria turned to be the largest exporter to italy registering 4,844m euro.

these figures were presented by italy's joint mediterranean chambers of commerce at close of summit in malta. speaking for the sidelines, francesco cordano, italy's chief at the italian chamber of commerce in cairo said that his country though being a regional leader, had to recover position in civil engineering sectors while consolidating its position in the textiles and mechanical industry, he added.

the mediterranean market is considered italian's industry's reference market, according to cordano. italy must aim for picking eu projects in the area having great opportunities for investments and development.

he reiterated that italy should consolidate its leadership in the finished products sectors like textiles and mechanical sectors.
