USDA forecast India's cotton output 22pct down for 2005-06

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that the cotton production in India for the year 2005-06 is expected to crawl down 22% to 19mn bales (1 bale=170 kgs) due to lesser yields and crop area.
According to the report, consumption is noticed increasing to 20.4mn bales because of low costs and rising demand for textiles all over the globe. Cotton imports are expected lower at 700,000 bales comparing to 900,000 bales in the year 2004-05 and exports at 1mn bales.
As per USDA report, the production of approximately 19mn bales during the July-June marketing year is the second highest yearly production after the record production of 23.2mn bales in the year 2004-05.
Indian government body, The Cotton Advisory Board, has projected 23mn bales of cotton production for the 2004-05.
The total area under cotton crop growing is expected to down at 8.8mn hectares next year from 9mn hectares in current year.
USDA explained the turn down will be largely in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra due to anticipated shift towards competing crops like sugarcane, tobacco and chillies.
