Cotton consumption in the textile sector is expected to grow by 58% in fiscal year 2005-06. This rise is a result of smooth supply and low cost of cotton vis-a-vis man-made fibre (MMF) and yarn. The consumption of cotton fibers was recorded nearly 55.5 pct in the year 2004-05. The expected consumption in the running year is about to increase to 20.4mn bales.

As per Global Agriculture Information Network (GAIN) reports, cotton consumption in the textile sector improved in year 2004-05, was due to the higher cost of petroleum products. The lower cost of cotton fibers, cause to mills covert cotton and polyester blend from 55:45 to 60:40.

To fulfill the demand of developing clothing industry, the Indian textile sector must keep expanding at the rate of 4 to 5 pct year. More than 95 pct of the yarn is manufactured in the organized sector (large-scale spinning units and composite mills).

The weaving industry is mainly supplied by the unorganized sector (small-scale spinning units, power looms, handlooms, hosiery units) , with the power looms accounting for 60 pct, handlooms for 18 pct, and hosiery units for 17pct of total cloth production.

The developing economy of the country and population will hike the clothing demand to 5 to 6 pct in the running year.
