Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi called upon Malaysia's textile and batik industry to capitalize on its capacities to produce high quality batik to become the top exporter of these products in the world.
He said fashion designers whose works were recognised locally and overseas and well known names like Tom Abang Saufi, Bernard Chandran and Rizalman can transform the fashion scenario, he said at a seminar jointly organised by Yayasan Budi Penyayang Malaysia and the State Government.
He said the use of batik was not restricted to baju kurung and was satisfied on batik being well received by foreign participants at international conferences.
He clarified that Indonesian batik, was different from the Malaysian design.
He appreciated Yayasan Budi Penyayang's collaboration with the National Handicraft Centre to start a programme, to train batik producers.
Young people will get training in batik production and later in turn will train new students under this program, Abdullah said.
He exhorted the Foundation to continue the batik initiative started by his wife, Datin Seri Endon Mahmood Endon and now carried on by their daughter, Nori Abdullah, till the perceived goal was achieved.
