Knitting yarn sector output slips again

Australian Wool Innovation Limited said after falling in the first 3 years of decade, production levels in Italy's knitting yarn sector stabilised in 2004.

While this brought some hope that the decline had been arrested, preliminary estimates suggest that production levels fell again in 2005, although not at the same high rate seen in 2002 and 2003.

In contrast to the falls in chemical fibre and cotton yarns, wool yarns did better, with a solid rise in woollen yarns offset slightly by a moderate drop in exports of wool worsted yarns.

The rise in demand for wool woollen-spun yarns was widespread among the major export markets, including the EU-25 market and Hong Kong. While demand from the EU countries for woollen yarn from Italy lifted in 2005, demand from the same countries for wool worsted yarn fell.

The largest declines were in exports to Germany, France and Portugal, as well as to South Korea.
