The production of textiles and apparel in the Central Asian country of Tajikistan decreased by 3.8 percent year-on-year to 646.1million somoni (approximately US$ 135 million) during the first nine months of 2013, Avesta news agency reported quoting Ministry of Energy and Industry data.

The 3.8 percent decrease in textile and clothing industrial production was mainly due to 17 percent decrease in the country’s cotton production during the nine-month period.

From January to September 2013, Tajikistan exported textiles and clothing worth US$ 152.2 million, of which cotton fibre accounted for US$ 123.4 million, according to the Customs data.

Last week, Tajikistan’s Minister of Agriculture Qosim Qosimov met with Andrey Gitchuns, representative of the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), and exchanged views on Tajikistan’s membership of the ICAC.

Cotton is an important contributor to Tajikistan’s agricultural sector and national economy. It is grown on 45 percent of the country’s irrigated arable land, accounting for 60 percent of Tajikistan’s total agricultural output, and provides livelihood to 75 percent of rural population.
