China's textile industry is increasingly facing ‘green’ trade barriers, participants at a recent international seminar on China’s textile industry and standardization were told.

Ji Zhengkun, chairman of China Association of Standardization, informed the audience that the growth rate of China’s textile and apparel exports slowed in the first quarter of this year, mainly due to ‘green’ trade barriers, including quality and safety, environmental protection, and technology-related barriers.

Of the various ‘green’ trade barriers, the Chinese textile enterprises are most likely to fall under the category of prevention and control of toxic and hazardous substances, according to reports.

In 2012, nearly half of the textile and apparel product recall initiated by the EU stakeholders were against the Chinese products, which included 10 cases involving hazardous substances.
