The largest state-owned Kaumi Jute Mills in northern region of the country is facing threat of closure again for want of raw jute.
About 76,000 quintals of jute are needed to keep the mill running till June of this year.
Three months back about 43,000 quintals were purchased which is nearly exhausted, sources said.
Workers and employees of the mill numbering around 3961 feel they may lose their jobs as it has no fund to buy jute.
The workers wages has remained unpaid for almost 28 weeks, the sources said.
The mill has incurred a loss of about Tk710 million (Rs71 crore) having a heavy burden of bank loans and credits.
Inspite of repeated request Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) has not supplied spare parts to the old mill which in turn has hindered the production.
Following demonstration by workers and employees the authorities reopened the mill in January this year.
The mill is facing closure again due to negligence of authorities concerned and workers are preparing for tougher agitation.
The mill had initially started with 533 weaving machines in 1961 with about 7,000 workers and employees.
