China's cotton imports surge in December 2013

China's cotton imports surged both on year-on-year and month-on-month basis in December 2013, according to the China Cotton Association.
 
China imported 608,600 tons of cotton in December 2013, up 435,500 tons or 251.6 percent compared to November, and an increase of 14.4 percent year-on-year, the data showed.
 
The average import price of cotton during the month stood at US$ 2,102/ton, which was $126 or 6 percent less than the November import price, but 8 percent more compared to the average import price in December 2012.
 
In 2013, China imported a total of 4,149,400 tons of cotton, registering a decline of 19.2 percent year-on-year.
 
During the current cotton season beginning September 1, 2013, China’s total cotton imports stood at 1,124,200 tons, showing a drop of 18 percent year-on-year.
 
In the previous cotton season from September 2012 to August 2013, China imported 4.396 million tons of cotton, down 19.2 percent year-on-year.
