China's Zhangjiagang FTZ leads in wool industry

China’s textile industry has been experiencing many difficulties and setbacks in recent years due to the impact of the global economic downturn, but the Zhangjiagang Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in China’s Jiangsu province has fully played a leading role as the country’s wool production and export base.

The Zhangjiagang FTZ got advantage of agglomeration effect, and it relied on preferential bonded policy, convenient inspection and quarantine measures, and made a concerted effort to improve product quality, and make structural adjustments to promote wool exports.

According to statistics from the Zhangjiagang Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, in 2013, Zhangjiagang FTZ exported 23,500 tons of wool worth US$ 300 million, registering an increase of 36.3 percent year-on-year and 34 percent year-on-year, respectively.

Zhangjiagang FTZ was able to become leader in China’s wool industry owing to certain characteristics and advantages. First, the wool enterprises located in the Zhangjiagang FTZ are relatively concentrated in terms of geographical area, which paves way for easy communication and exchange of information between enterprises.

Secondly, the FTZ has hundreds of international advanced production lines which meet the requirements for the production of high-quality products.

The FTZ has nearly 100,000 sq m of warehousing and raw wool storage facility, which is also an advantage.

In 2013, the FTZ exported wool to nearly 50 countries and regions, and Zhangjiagang bonded fleece wool trade has become a barometer of global trade. Further, due to active exploration of new models of export inspection and quarantine wool pigging separation, focus on strengthening the quality of enterprise management, technology updates, category management, and continuous improvement in the quality of products, Zhangjiagang FTZ wool export trade is bound to grow steadily.
