Zipper industry in doldrums

After the elimination of textiles quotas, ready-to-wear garment export has witness downslide as Asian countries began picking up large orders from big ticket retailers belonging to the US and European Union member countries.

Turkey once boasted of a zipper manufacturing industry that was set way back in 1945.

However, by 1990 just three to five firms remained active producing zippers.

Two years back, the number of companies swelled to 230 riding over the textile boom, only to slide back to 200. Early this year, the figure dipped to 190.

As a result, even the numbers of workers in this industry has shrunk from 30,000 in 2004 to about 15000-20000 today.

Registered manufactures of Turkey produce about 60 million metres of zippers and 80 percent of that is exported only to Italy.

Besides, zippers produced here are second to Italy in terms of quality, and again second in terms of quantity produced by China.
