In 2005, Nigeria had lost about 70,000 jobs in the textile industry due to continuous smuggling of foreign textile materials.

Chief Peter Olanrewaju, Director-General, Nigerian Textile Manufacturers Assocaition, said that because of the smuggling, loss of jobs in textile industry is rising and the unemployment ratio is also increasing.

Olanrewaju pointed out that unless Government addresses this issue seriously, it will continue to hamper economic growth of the country.

Olanrewaju alleged that laxity of Government officers, especially the customs and some political leaders give boom to illicit textile trade in Nigeria.

Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Export Promotion Council, Ms Modupe Sasore, said that the Nigerian customs promote the perpetuation of illegal textile trade.
