VDMA honours seven young textile researchers

At its members’ meeting held in Lindau on Lake Constance, VDMA Textile Machinery Association short-listed seven successful young engineers. Every year, the Walter Reiners-Stiftung Foundation of the German textile machinery industry sponsors creativity prizes for young engineers.
This time, to recognise outstanding dissertations, master thesis and project studies, President of the Foundation and Chairman of Lindauer DORNIER GmbH, Peter Dornier invited winners to the awards ceremony at its Dornier Aviation & Aerospace Museum.
“The Dornier Aviation & Aerospace Museum in Friedrichshafen is an inspiring celebration of the pioneer spirit and makes it possible to experience highest technical performance and was the ideal setting to honour young academics”, VDMA explained.
In his speech Peter Dornier called the textile machinery industry a “high-tech incubator”, which contributes in a decisive manner to meet challenges and provides solutions in applications like apparels and home textiles.
The prize in the dissertation category carrying prize money of 5,000 Euros was awarded to Dr. Thorsten Heinze of TU Chemnitz who undertook research on polyester fibres as alternative to braided metallic ropes used for conveyor technology in applications which include elevators, cranes and shaft hoisting systems.
Due to the excellent quality of two master thesis this year, the prize money of 3,000 Euros was given to two engineers – Moniruddoza Ashir of TU Dresden and Markus Appelmann of Hochschule Mannheim.
The study presented by Moniruddoza deals with hybrid woven structures for lightweight applications, which can be used from automotive engineering to sports equipment like tennis rackets or golf clubs. The master thesis of Markus with a very practical approach is devoted to development of a bench for testing the loop formation on warp knitting machines.
A team of students of RWTH Aachen were honoured with the creativity award of 2,000 Euros. Dominik Granich, Gerrit Hartmann, Andreas Schulz und Philipp Schleer presented a concept for development of a braiding machine for stents, which can be applied in treatment of vascular diseases.
“With the Walter Reiners-Stiftung, we are actively engaged in promoting junior engineers. Students regularly gain an insight into practice with excursions to member companies and to leading textile exhibitions, which are financially supported by the foundation”, VDMA said. (AR)
