A new exhibit featuring some of the exquisite period outfits worn by the characters of the British television series Downton Abbey is scheduled to be opened from January 10, 2015 at Pratt Historical Building, Cohasset, Massachusetts.

Titled as Dressing for Downton, the display will offer a comparative study between the fictional Yorkshire country estate-based show and a real-life 15-acre sprawling summer estate in Cohasset, The Ridges (previously owned by a local businessman named Albert S. Bigelow and later Gen. Edward Logan).

The 50-piece exhibition, which also marks the premiere of the period drama’s fifth season, due to be aired from January 5, 2015 on the US TV channel PBS, will highlight the changing fashions of the time period as depicted in the series, 1910 to 1925.

Some of the major attractions of the event include a 1920s flapper dress, a 1925 silver and turquoise stones embellished black velvet evening gown, and a red and green beading adorned gold-threaded mesh dress (worn by Felice Low, wife of the late Patriot Ledger publisher G. Prescott Low in the TV series).

Slated to run sometime till mid-March, 2015, all the featured items have been sourced from the existing textile collections of the exhibit organizer, Cohasset Historical Society.

Earlier several UK and US art galleries and museums including Oxfordshire’s West Ox Arts Gallery and Winterthur Museum in Delaware have hosted exhibitions on the Downton Abbey costumes. The show’s costume designer Caroline McFall has been honoured with a Designers Guild award and an Emmy for her exotic creations in the period drama series. (PB)
