Company officials of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) at Islamabad stated that IOC has offered to sell 320,000 tons of diesel to Pakistan through the Wagah border at a discount.

Indian Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar is expected to ask Pakistan administration to eliminate diesel from its negative list of imports from India, when he meets Pakistani Commerce Minister Humayun Akhtar.

Nani S. Aiyar is official visiting Pakistan from today through June 8, 2005.

To get Pakistan's diesel import order, IOC is ready to sell the product at reduced rates compared to prevailing rates.

Pakistan imports 2.5 million tons of diesel from Kuwait per year, and it doesn't have any refinery in Lahore-Multan area which gets products either from inland refineries or from Karachi (imported products) by rail, or road.

"IOC can directly supply diesel o Lahore, and it can be piped from Panipat refinery to Jalandhar, from where it can be sent to Lahore by road or rail," he added.

The company offered 320,000 tons of diesel for six months beginning July.

The official informed that the IOC intends to sell petrochemicals to Pakistan. Meantime, Aiyar is taking up IOC's cause for linear alkyl benzene (LAB) exports from Gujarat and PTA and Polymers export through Wagah border from Panipat, India, by road to Pakistan.

He explained that all these products have higher demand in Pakistan and are currently imported from various sources. Imports from India would benefit the consuming industries in Pakistan through land route.
