United Nations Development Report on collapse of Fiji's garment industry.
Report pointed out various factor of foreign trade wherein foreign ministry exerted under critical situation, Chief Executive Isikeli Mataitoga stated.
This situation is not the unique to country; many developing countries could not remain unaffected to this trading phenomenon, informed Mataitoga.
At the end of 2004 Fiji's garment quota in the US under Multi Fibre Agreement expired and after that Foreign Ministry had started talks to establish substitute mechanism which could protect country's interest.
After end of quota regime and foraying of bigger players in market, country's textile and garment sector started falling and in year 2005 about 6,000 workers washed their hands from the job.
Foreign Ministry is also discussing to the US to provide benefits similar to the African Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA) and requesting Australia for extension of Australia's Import Credit Scheme.
