Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) has joined forces with the International Fibre Centre, the CSIRO and the Australian Wool Education Trust; to deliver courses for professionals working in all sectors of the Australian and international wool industry.

The Australian Wool Textile Training Centre (AWTTC) will be based at the CSIRO Textile and Fibre division at Geelong, Victoria, with pilot programs to be run in September 2006 and 2007.

Manager of Processing Technologies with AWI, Gary Robinson says these courses will be tailored to meet industry needs, and are designed to improve the knowledge and skill of wool industry practitioners across the globe.

"Australia is the world leader in wool science and innovation, and we are making our expertise available to the international market,” said Mr Robinson.

"The establishment of the AWTTC will also help ensure people understand the inherent qualities of Australian Merino wool, and enable the use of the fibre well into the future."

A survey commissioned by AWI looked at 12 of the world's major wool processing countries, and identified there are significant skills development issues across the international wool industry.

"This initiative will make certain there are people within the industry who have the skills and knowledge to work with wool into the future," said Gary Robinson.

Courses available at the AWTTC include an introduction to the Australian Wool Industry, Buying & Consignment Preparation of Australian Wool, Innovations in Wool Textile Technology and Contemporary Wool Dyeing and Finishing.

In addition, targeted information relating to Mill Management and Advanced Quality Management Systems, and Knowledge of Australian Wool for Designers and Retailers will be featured at the AWTTC.
