Court grants 2-month stay on Chtg Port congestion penalty

A high court bench of the Supreme Court division on Monday stayed for two months the congestion surcharge imposed on users of the Chittagong Port by the feeder vessels operators.
The bench comprising of justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury and justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, issued the directive upon a petition filed by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association.
The court directed the Chittagong Port Authority, and feeder vessels' operators to show cause by two months as to why the imposition of surcharge would not be declared illegal.
The court also asked the feeder vessel operators to refrain from realising the charge during the period.
The feeder operators imposed congestion surcharge on the freights to be shipped by vessels at the Chittagong Fort on June 5, arguing that the turnaround time of the vessels increased significantly due to the container congestions in the port and increased cost of operators.
