Cotton Development Organisation statistics reveal that the output in the Kazinga Channel declined nearly 50 percent during the 2005-2006 season.

Farmers produced 42,000 bales of cotton from 80,000 acres in 2004-2005, while yielding only 22,500 bales from 45,000 acres during the latest season.

Experts believe that September 2005 famine and the instability in prices, adversely affected the region's cotton crop.

Drought forced the farmers to sow 200 kilograms of cotton seeds per every acre, instead of standard 400 kilogram.

A kilo of cotton cost shs 600, Shs350 and Shs450 in 2003-2004, 2004-2005 and 2005-2006, respectively.

Government is trying to improve the situation and has offered subsidy of Shs50 per kilogram.
