Cotton imports surge

Vietnamese General Customs reported that cotton imports turnover in June 2006 reached 14.9 thousands tons to US $18.4 million, registering sharp month–on–month decrease of 22.1 percent and 20.2 percent, respectively.

However, in comparison with same period of 2005, this represented an increase of 11.6 percent and 3.0 percent in term of value and volume.

Rough cotton material accounted for biggest part in entire imports turnover of the goods, at 62.7 percent, and totalled to $11.3 million in June 2006, down by 41.6 percent from previous month.

In the period, figures of processed cotton and fibred cotton earned $2.5 million and $750,000, posting month-on–month surge of 6.1 percent and 83 percent, respectively.

India and the US are two biggest suppliers of the goods of Vietnam, worth 25.6 million and $24.7 million, respectively.

Average importing price in June 2006 ranged between $1,060 and 1,530 per ton.

The US suppliers quoted price of $1,069-1,268 per ton and $1,104-1,397 per ton given by Switzerland.
