In a meeting with US Congressional delegation, Kaliopate Tavola, Foreign Affairs Minister put a proposal with an intention to increase garment trade between Fiji and the US to help country's dying garment industry.
Tavola explained that end of Multi Fiber Agreement (MFA) had left country's garment industry uncompetitive as they have to compete with countries like China and India.
MFA was introduced in 1974 with an aim to help developing countries boost their garment exports.
Talova demanded from the US Government a Generalized System of Preference (GSP) which helps to strengthen economic development and provide duty free entry into the US market for more than 4,650 products from 144 designated beneficiary countries and territories.
