Textile Minister Shankarsinh Vaghela informed that Prime Minister has approved a proposal of 1,000 crore loan waiver package for handloom weavers in the country.

The Minister stated that they have been given waiver on the line of farmers who were also provided certain concessions. Vaghela said that efforts were made to reduce the loan interest rate of 12 percent to 8-8.5 percent, which will be applicable once the waiver package is implemented.

Exports worth 3,300 crore have been recorded by the handloom sector which has grown 10 percent annually.

Minister also informed that Government had allotted another Rs550 crore for the revival of 15 out of 22 National Textiles Corporation (NTC) mills and the process would take off in a few months.

In another move, two sick textile mills in Kanpur, presently belonging to British India Corporation (BIC) are to be taken up for revival after merging them with NTC and will help in the revival of age old brands 'Lal Imli' and 'Dhariwal'.

Following the success of 'Dilli Haat', which was to promote the handicraft industry, Government has decided to set up 37 marketing outlets for textiles.
