Bombay Dyeing targets South for PSF

With new polyester staple fibre (PSF) facility at Patalganga in Maharashtra getting ready for commercial launch by the year end, Bombay Dyeing and Manufacturing Company Ltd is looking to enter the South's man-made fibre market.

It is expected to go on production trial in November and will be producing polymer intermediary, Dimethyl terephthalate (DMT). The PSF unit is worth Rs400 crore and is situated within the Patalganga manufacturing complex.

According to P V Kuppuswamy, Joint Managing Director (Polyester division) of Bombay Dyeing, the 500 tons per day plant will work as a forward integration facility as it will use the in house DMT as the raw material for the PSF.

The unit will be using the technology of Invista of US which has been taken over by fibres and polymers giant Koch Industries.

Bombay Dyeing is also setting up the marketing establishment at Coimbatore to take care of the customer's interests and provide technical support for markets in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Southern Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Bombay Dyeing's entry will heighten competition in this already saturated market, what with leading players like Reliance Industries, Indo-Rama Synthetics India Ltd having their domineering presence there.

PSF market domestically has been growing at the rate of 10 percent and the abolition of quota and entry of new products in textiles and non-textiles are giving the producers hope of large volume market.

With the annual domestic production estimated at 100,000 tons per month, more than what the market can absorb at the moment, a cut throat competition is well and truly on the cards in days to come.
