Use of Bt cotton by farmers is scheduled to add Rs7, 000 crore to the rural economy of India. Around 2.2 million farmers who have used this variety will witness an average rise of production by 400 kg per acre.
Mahyco Monsanto Biotech India Ltd (MMB) projected that Bt cotton has been used in 8.6 million acres of land across India, a staggering 275% higher than last year's 3.1 million acres.
Deputy MD, MMB, Bipin Solanki informed that every farmer using Bt hybrid would make a profit of Rs6, 700 per acre. He projected that in the coming two years, 16-17 million acres of land will use Bt cotton variety.
