According to industry expert, many countries including Malawi are trying for change in African Growth Opportunity Act (Agoa).
The Act states that all beneficiaries of Agoa should produce textiles from locally grown raw material for duty free exports to United States of America from 2008. But countries want change in act because most of them produce textiles from imported raw materials.
According to Kantila Desai, Chairman of the Garments and Textile Manufacturers Association of Malawi (GTMA) and Knitwear Industries Limited, Malawi and other countries benefiting from Agoa cannot match with India and China and US should soften the stand on policy.
Malawi requires supports from US because it is not self-reliant in garment manufacturing. Even Mozambique and Zambia poses challenge for Malawi, as they are capable of producing most of the raw material.
Agoa has allotted 1,50,000 jobs to several countries and allowed countries to export goods worth $448 million to US.
