The Mekhela Sador is an integral part of the bridal trousseau of Assamese woman. It symbolise feminine aesthetics when worn with a riha (blouse).
This unique piece of dress embraces exquisite weaves. Mekhala is a cross between a sarong and a lungi, while the Sador is worn with a special criss-cross pleat down the front to lend it elegance.
The outfit is usually made of silk called muga with exquisite embroidory. The designs of trees, leaves, flowers, peacocks, along with ethnic paisley and tribal motifs in stylised forms are found.
The traditional colours of the dress are red, green and black along with the golden coloured muga silk. Now it is also found in yellow, green, blue, beige, silver, coppery pink and brown.
