Inadequate marketing support is affecting the weavers of cotton durries or rugs, known in local parlance as 'shatrangis,' in Warangal.
Shatrangis, which are recognized for quality weaving and durability, are produced by simple method using a pedal loom.
There are about 10,000 families who solely rely on this industry for their livelihood. As it is no more profitable, they are planning for alternative to weaving.
Since competition from Chinese companies, exports of carpets reduced drastically. The industry which earlier exported goods worth Rs12 crores, now fails miserably to reach Rs1 crores mark.
Weavers are currently working as daily labourers and others still in the business, are struggling for orders.
Daily wages of Rs40 per feet is paid to them for weaving and the maximum they weave, is just two feet a day.
Although qualities of Warangal carpets are good, weavers do not have good dyeing technique compared to China.
