The Chennai High Court passed orders to close down 660 dyeing and bleaching units in Tirupur instantly following the failure of the unit owners provide evidence of action taken to install reverse osmosis plants.
Division Bench including Justice M. Karpagavinayagam and Justice C. Nagappan observed that despite provided chances by this court, all the units have not organized themselves with the opportunities by paying only 25 percent of the total cost to reverse osmosis plant manufacturers.
The court had asked the units to show evidence of payment of at least 25 percent of the total plant cost as advance to the manufacturers. However, out of 690 units only 30 obeyed the norms, said the Advocate-General N.R. Chandran.
Taking the matter very seriously the bench ordered to Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to close down all these units with immediate effect, and directions are also given to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to cut off power supply to these units for the time being.
