CSB aims to promote Vanya silk

Karnataka's mulberry silk has made a mark in the world arena as it is the second largest producer of silk.

The Bangalore-based Central Silk Board is now turning its attention towards Vanya (wild) silk which is eco-friendly and its uniqueness has no competition in the world market.

The vanya silk allows the caterpillar to transformation into a winged silk moth. The rearing of these silk worms is conducted in nature on the trees in the open where as mulberry silk can be domesticated and reared indoors.

CSB is organizing a five-day silk exhibition starting January third, 2007 in Bhubaneshwar, capital of Orissa and plans to arrange series of exhibition-cum-buyer seller meets in cities like Hyderabad, Delhi Mumbai, Bhubaneswar and Chandigarh to promote the vanya silk.

The country produces around 17,305 MT of silk annually of which 15,445 MT comprise mulberry silk and 1,860 MT Vanya silk.
