Central Govt asked to provide hank yarn at low rates

Handloom industry is in peril due to rising number of power looms. Vudata Subba Rao, member of National Handloom Advisory Board, has requested central Government to provide hank yarn at mill gate rates to save the industry from doom.

Weavers cannot benefit from supply of hank yarn at depots of National Handloom Development Commission, because rates at these depots are higher than retail market prices.

Rao accused textile mills of hiking yarn prices frequently on basis of false excuses like rise in power tariffs, budget revision and power cuts.

Textile units are taking subsidy stating that they manufacture 40 percent hank yarn supposed to be given to weavers, but they are not following rules for producing the same. They are trying to deceive Government by creating bogus shortage of hank yarn.

Indian handloom sector has total hank yarn requirement of 561 million kg.
