Textile Research Centre (TAM), the only one of its kind in the country, is on verge of being closed down. It was set up five years back by joint efforts of Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK), Aegean University and Turkish Textile Foundation.

TAM has been the first research center of its kind and has offered many significant projects to textile industry.

TAM's Deputy Director Isil Tarakcioglu, who is also a lecturer in Aegean University's textile engineering department, informed the media that TUBITAK had demanded TAM's closedown after ending the University-Industry Joint Research Centers Program (USAMP).

Reason for making this demand is that the ending of USAMP can create legal problems for the center. Few of TAM's R&D staff members have already been laid off.
