Data from the Chinese Customs Bureau shows that similarly to September, volumes of raw and semi-processed wool imported during the month of October 2006 were down year-on-year.
Also similarly to the nine month period to September, for the ten month period ending in October imports were record breaking, lifting to their highest level since the peak in 2001.
During the ten month period, China's three main suppliers of raw and semi-processed wool - Australia, New Zeland and Uruguay - recorded substantial growth.
New Zealand and Uruguay noted gains in their market shares during the period. Australia, while remaining the key exporter, recorded a moderate decline in share despite volumes lifting year-on-year.
Over the past few years there has been a distinctive change in the type of wool imported into China with the majority now being in greasy form. During the ten month period ending in October 2006, greasy wool exports in aggregate represented almost all but 20% of all wool imported into China.
