Woolgrower support sought for production forecast

Woolgrowers are being asked to assist Australian Wool Innovation's (AWI) forecasting process by providing specific information about their farm conditions, flock management and production intentions.
A sample of 1800 producers selected from all regions of Australia will be asked to participate in a telephone survey. The results of the survey will be presented to the State forecasting committees and to the National Wool Production Forecasting Committee, chaired by Dr. David James.
Dr. James explained that direct input from the growers was vital to the committees. The survey results provide an objective assessment of conditions in all regions and producer intentions will guide early forecasts for the following season. These help woolgrowers make informed production decisions.
“Previous surveys conducted for AWI and the Sheep CRC, have contributed greatly. The availability of objective and timely data assists the consensus forecasting process,” said Dr James.
“With so much of Australia experiencing drought conditions in 2006, and sheep numbers at their lowest in over 50 years, it is more important than ever to get direct feedback from growers on the current status of the flock.”
Growers that are contacted will be asked for details of their flock composition, joining intentions for 2007, and likely changes in production under scenarios of a normal break or extended dry conditions. No individual or personal data will be distributed. Only regional or State aggregate data will be provided to the committees.
