Readymade garments (RMG) sector, country's one of the premier foreign exchange earners, is hit hard by shortage of skilled labourers.

At present, about 2.2 million workers are employed in the garment industry and related factories, most of them are unskilled people at managerial level.

According to estimates, there are 3,093 apparel manufacturers, 115 textile, knit and fabric suppliers, 368 accessories suppliers and 632 buying houses in the country.

Factories employ workers from locals as well as from overseas but there is vast difference in salary offered to them.

The BGMEA Institute of Fashion Technology (BIFT) is the only registered institute in the country offering courses in managerial level.

Even there is huge shortage of mid-level managers like skilled machine operators, quality controllers, merchandisers and production managers.

Although about 2.2 million of workers are engaged in the industry, productivity of workers is less compared to Sri Lanka and China.

According to experts, most of the students would rather remain unemployed instead of working in technical line of garment sector.

Lack of interest among people to work in the sector is major reason behind shortage of manpower.
