Federal Government, recently, organized a Presidential Standing Committee on Cotton and Textiles (PSCCT) to help the cotton and textile industry in adverse conditions.
This association will be responsible to study various trends in different sectors and make recommendations to improve textile industry.
The focus will be on cotton farmers and traders, spinning, ginning and finished products manufacturing industries.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the committee, Minister of Commerce, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar, said, “Sadly, in recent years, the sector both in terms of cotton production and textile manufacturing had witnessed significant declines in fortunes with so many textile plants now closed while those still operating suffer from underutilisation of capacity with concomitant losses in employment and revenue. Yet, no one is left in doubt about the enormous potential of the cotton and textiles industry in Nigeria if well organised.”
Cotton industry in Nigeria has deteriorated over the years, not being able to withstand fierce competition from Asian countries.
Raw cotton has failed to attract foreign consumers causing steady decline in the exports.
