Tribal art to adorn sarees

The Jharkhand state government has decided to promote centuries old Sohrai, Jadu Katia and Paytkar art forms.

Sketches of the three traditional paintings has been selected by industries department to be used as designs in sarees that will be produced by Jharkhand State Khadi and Gramudyog Board, informed Dhirendra Kumar, Special Secretary of Industries Department, and Director of Handicraft, Silk and Handloom.

Government wants to promote painting and interior decorations which are heritage of tribals within the country and abroad, Kumar said.

Sohrai, Jadu Katia and Paytkar designs if used in silk sarees would add value to them which will be produced by the board, he said.

For this purpose the board has set up a training-cum-production centre at Kharsawan and Chandil for promotion of silk sarees.

It has formed a policy to make experts of this art as consultants and others be made as trainers for promoting tribal paintings in coming years.

Help of certain NGOs would be taken to conduct surveys to promote tribal art forms, according to senior officials of Industries Department
