Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Kofi Osei-Ameyaw announced that the Government was rapidly following plans to save the domestic textile industry from doldrums.

Kofi informed that the Government's saving plan includes; to generate more employment, payment of more corporate tax and to provide an opportunity to compete in global export markets.

Member for Jomoro, Osei Ameyaw informed that the tariffs on textile imports like dyestuff and colours have dropped down from 10 percent to 5 percent in 2004. The step, which was taken to reduce the cost of manufacturing of textile, could be reviewed again.

He informed that the Ministry had created a single corridor entry for African Textile prints through Takoradi port which would plug smuggling in a big way.

He said the step was targeted to abolish under-declaration and mis-description of textile inputs and restrictions over the activities of dubious importers, who use to smuggle.

The decision would also make sure for full payment of import duties and other charges, which will enforce importers to sell at appropriate prices.

Osei opined that the Ministry has been in talks with the domestic textile producers, the possibility of helping them to re-organize their plants to enable them to hike their production capacity.

The local cotton industry was being re-organized to take initiative in support of the textile industry, which would made the sector more competitive in the global cotton market.
