Demand for synthetic fabrics is expected to rise between 15 to 20 percent, sources in Surat textile industry say, which satisfies almost 65 percent of the nation's total demand for man-made fabric.
The retail boom will create demand for polyester fabrics as cotton fabrics are comparatively expensive by 40 percent, said Arun Jariwala, Chairman, Federation of Indian Art Silk Weaving Industry (FIASWI).
Major share in retail mall structure will be cornered by fabrics and garments as polyester fabrics are cheaper than cotton fabrics, said Alok Shah, Director, Garden Silk Mills.
Present trend in retail market will help industry players to upgrade their units. This will reduce cost of production and make the units more competitive, he said.
Manufacturing capacity of polyester yarn has doubled up from 1.1 million tons in 2003-04 to 2.1 million tons. This has been due to companies like Reliance, Indo Rama and Garden Silk Mills going in for capacity expansion, he added.
