During the current cotton season, starting from October, the acreage under Bt cotton in India has gone up to 38 percent with cultivation of Bt cotton being undertaken in 34.61 lakh hectares.

Maharashtra has topped in cultivation of Bt cotton with an acreage of 16.55 lakh hectares, Andhra Pradesh is second with Bt cotton acreage in 6.57 lakh hectares, which is around 69.3 percent of total area of the state, according to a data released by Directorate of Cotton Development.

Bt cotton cultivation has increased appreciably since it was introduced in the country during 2002-03. The acreage would have increased further had the availability of seeds been as per demand.

Prices of Bt cotton seeds prices came down considerably, encouraging farmers to opt for Bt cotton cultivation.

Bt cotton seed packet which could be sown in one acre cost Rs 750 during 2006-07 in most states as which earlier used to cost Rs 1600 during last year.

About 41 Bt cotton varieties are approved for cultivation in the North, Central and South zones which have been developed by about 15 private seed firms.
