Henan is one of the largest cotton-growing provinces in China. Zhoukou, Shangqiu, Kaifeng and Nanyang are important bases for cotton textile industry. Henan province harvested 667,000 tons cotton in 2004, accounting for 10.5 percent of the country's total output, ranking third among national cotton production provinces.
In 2005, Henan province produced 1.39 million tons of cotton yarn, taking the third place in the country. Henan completed production of 1.6 billion meters of cloth, listing the eighth in the country.
Moreover, with introduction of various new technologies, the proportion of chemical fiber and cotton used to spin yarn can be reduced from 70 to 55 percent.
As a result, Henan cotton resources can sustain a cotton spinning capacity of 12 million spindles. In addition, the regular inflow of cotton from other provinces into Henan is 300,000 tons a year, so cotton supply will meet the production needs of nearly four million spindles.
