Orissa Crafts Heritage Festival gets underway

Orissa Crafts Heritage Festival has been organized to exhibit artifacts created by craftsmen and artisans got underway at YMCA Hall here on Monday.

Adventure, a voluntary organisation of artisans supported by Office of Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, organized the fair which will conclude on February 23.

The artisans are trying out new designs with guidance from government officials.

Products made of date palm leaf, sabai grass and golden grass (yellow grass) have been kept for sale. Containers, pen stands, shopping bags, fruit baskets and caps made using date palm leaf by the artisans from Baliapal in Baleswar district are also eye-catching.

Decorative pieces, pooja utensils, jewellery items and utility products such as door handles and boxes made out of brass by artisans belonging to the Dokra caste are also on display.

Carrybags, water bottle bags, purses, schoolbags and table cloth with splendid patch work along with tarkasi work (silver wire work) from Cuttack besides bangles, anklets, rings, earrings displayed at the stall, are also noteworthy.

Sambalpur sarees and dress materials in bright, attractive colours and combinations add color to the festival.

Traditional Patachitra work and palm leaf paintings and other decorative items made out of jungle wood and stones along with umbrellas, lamp shades, wall hangings, cushion covers and bags with fine glass work on them too have been included in the fair.

'supari' paintings which is intricate work on betel nuts excite many.
