Cotton production may decline in Gujarat

Cotton production was predicted to be more than 102 crore bales at the onset of the cotton season which was later estimated to decline in the wake of heavy rainfall.

Based on the higher areas brought under Bt cotton cultivation, market players had estimated cotton production to reach over 102 crore bales but damage to crops due to rains in some parts of the state, forced market players to revise cotton production estimates to Rs75-80 lakh bales of which nearly Rs55 lakh have already reached the market.

This indicates cotton season in Gujarat is expected by end of April and final cotton production may decline further to Rs65-70 lakh bales.

However, market sources are of the opinion that clear picture would emerge during the next week.

Lack of exports orders coupled with decline in cotton production have started to impact ginners in Gujarat, said R C Jain, Chairman and Managing Director, TT Group.
