Sophie Hong revives traditional art of Mud Silk

Laquered Silk Dress
Taiwanese fashion designer Sophie Hong has rediscovered a traditional art of making lacquered silk and modernized it according to need of today's fashion. She specializes in creating Lacquered silk wardrobes.

The locals a remote village in China's Guangdong Province produced lacquered silk which is also known as mud silk.

The mud silk is made by dyeing silk in pure yam juice and grass, exposing the silk to sunlight and then rubbing it in mud from the bottom of the river, which creates stunning tortoise-shell patterns.

Sophie Hong's contribution as a fashion designer is evident in Taiwan's garment industry and she is also helping to carve a niche in the international market.

The Taiwanese designer has boutiques in major cities around the world, such as London, Paris, Tokyo, Milan, Hong Kong and New York.

Hong while creating an outfit concentrates mainly on the materials and comfort rather than focusing on colors and shapes.

According to Sophie Hong the stereotype silk is smooth, shiny and comes in bright colors but the mud silk has a rougher texture, dark colors

In 2005, Hong attended an international conference on culture and creation in Kaohsiung. She strongly feels that Taiwan should take steps to develop its textile industry.
